ASSIGNMENT TWO: SPORTS DRINK
CREATIVE CLASS: ASSIGNMENTS TO HELP CONSTRUCT A POWERFUL PORTFOLIO
SPORTS DRINKS: ASSIGNMENT TWO
SPORTS DRINKS can be boring or totally cool – it’s up to you.
All the rage and a multi-billion dollar business.
And so many terrible ads… sigh.
The creative team “I know what we’ll do, we’ll just put the bottle on a white background cause that’s all we need to do and we aren’t feeling all that creative today – did anyone bring donuts?”
Well, that’s just not gonna be us.
I want a killer, kickbutt shot of a sports drink to pitch to a client.
I am not gonna walk in and pitch them with a photo of a bottle on a white background. And no, before you ask, making it a black background ain’t gonna cut it.
I want something to give me the goosebumps, and make me feel like I MUST have that sports drink – and I mean right now.
Use the colors of the can or bottle to enhance its look. Use the shape and texture of the bottle to show me something that is as far away from a bottle on a white background as you can get.
This client is edgy, small, smart, and a bit irreverent. They KNOW they are not going up against the big Gator Ade guys – they have a boutique business and want to be the cooler choice. And the choice for the coolers. (see what I did there… heh.)
I don’t care if it is a portrait or landscape configuration.
And, no, I do not want an athlete guzzling it down… jeezzzzz… you’d think these guys could have a different idea once in a while.
A sampling of boring examples:
CAN THIS BE A COMPOSITE?
Yes, yes it can.
You could go to Unsplash and download a photograph of, say, a desert. Or a lake, or a waterfall, and use it for the background of your shot.
Make sure the lighting makes sense… an overcast day and bright sunny can is a problem, as is light on the mountains from the left and light on the can on the right.
OR… the can may look studio lit and simply place it over the background without worrying about it looking natural. But you must trim the can perfectly and provide at least a little congruity of lighting with the background.
Your choice.
The first tool you need are a piece of paper and a pencil. Sketch this out
