You can do these assignments in order, or jump around as necessary. Weather conditions may make it easier to do some than others.
Please save all work files.
Cohort Class:
These are our weekly class assignments. You have options:
- Do the assignment from this list.
- Do any assignment from the Module pages, but remember which one and on which module.
When you submit the work, you can use JPEG, GIF, or PDF.
Please keep the image size under 1400 pixels on the longest side, and save at under 700KB whenever possible.
Images must be submitted at least 24 hours before class to be included in the live reviews.
REMEMBER to include any work files relevant to the assignment: Behind-the-scenes (BTS) shots are necessary. We want to see your set.
Assignment 1: Coffee Shop Branding and Social Media
Objective: Create a new set of images for a mom and pop coffee shop.
- Photography: Showcase the stores unique qualities: light, selection, people, ambiance – whatever makes them special
- Design: Construct a modern logo and visual language that feels fresh, innovative, and relevant to today’s market.
- Typography: Choose a type pairing that works well for the type of store you are shooting and use them for social media pieces and in-store promotion.
- Tools: Photoshop, Canva, / Express, Creative Market for assets if needed
- Keep it simple, do not overthink it.
Deliverables:
Three photos for in-store use and social media.
One social media motion graphic (Instagram feed or Story)
One Point-of-purchase (POP) display graphic for in-store use. A poster 3’x4′.

Assignment 2: Sports Drink Ad and Promo Materials
Objective: Craft a magazine ad to introduce a new sports drink that is supposedly healthy.
- Photography: Do something to show the health and alertness benefits of the new sport drink
- Design: Keep the design in the fresh lifestyle genre and not in the ‘hard product’ genre… we want to see humans.
- Typography: You can choose the typography for this client
- Tools: Photoshop, InDesign/Affinity, Canva/Express, output to PDF

Full-page magazine ad (8.5×11 is fine), Instagram Story (verticle media)

Assignment 3: Stemware: Two Trade Ads
Objective: Craft a magazine ad to introduce a new sports drink that is supposedly healthy.
- Photography: Do something to show the health and alertness benefits of the new sport drink

- Typography: You can choose the typography for this client

Deliverables:
Two photos, two ad designs—the ads should be similar, with only the stemware changing.

Assignment 4: Fragrance Advertorial
Objective: Craft an advertorial that works to show the client’s new fragrance.
- Photography: Three photos of the fragrance bottle that fit into the advertorial layout.
- Design: A double page advertorial that can also be used as a brochure in retail.
- Typography: You can choose the typography for this client
- Tools: Photoshop, InDesign/Affinity, Canva/Express, output to PDF
Deliverables:
Three images of fragrance(s) and a layout of an advertorial (doublepage).

Assignment 5: Menu for a Spicy Restaurant
Objective: Menu cover for a spicy food restaurant.
- Photography: A menu item that shows how the menu mixes Thai and TexMex food
- Design: The menus are front and back, you will have a menu list and logo to to work with.
- Typography: You can choose the typography for this client
- Tools: Photoshop, InDesign/Affinity, Canva/Express, output to PDF
- AI Logo Builder: Use Kittl, Canva, or Adobe Express to put together a logo
Deliverables:
Two images, and a menu (front and back) using the images with a logo.

Assignment 6: The Magic of Pizza
Objective: A flyer and POP poster for a gourmet pizza restaurant.
- Photography: Great pizza shots, with smart use of typography
- Design: The flyer should recall the POP and both should invite sales
- Typography: You can choose the typography for this client
- Tools: Photoshop, InDesign/Affinity, Canva/Express, output to PDF
Deliverables:
Full 8.5×11 flyer featuring a signature pizza.
A point of purchase poster (optional) should look like the flyer.

Objective: A holiday sale for women’s shoes
- Photography: Photos of women’s shoes making sure to show all the pertinent points discussed.

Assignment 8: Ad for a Florist and a Full Pitch
Objective: We are going to produce an ad and pitch for a full campaign.
- Photography: A tabletop photo of flowers, NOT a flower arrangement.
- Design: This will be a full page ad with three iterations of the image.
- Typography: Your choice, but keeping in mind it is a florist.
- Logo: generate a logo with any of the AI logo tools
- Tools: Photoshop, InDesign/Affinity, Canva/Express, output to PDF
Deliverables:
You know their quarterly budget, and you know the price for the ad: figure out the best ways for them to proceed with the balance of their budget.

Assignment 10: A Brand Shoot for a Sunglass Distributor
Objective: a portrait of the author, a book cover design, and a mockup of the book
- Photography: product shot of a reflective surface with or without people
- Design: A full page ad and an Instagram or Facebook Story
- Typography: Ad design typography
- Tools: Photoshop, InDesign/Affinity, Canva/Express

Assignment 11: One Red Ballon – a Poster for an Event
Objective: A poster for either an outside art festival, or a dance concert
- Photography: a photograph to be the dominant focus of the poster
- Design: A traditional poster, 4’x3′, illustrating either event
- Typography: “One Red Balloon” is the name of the event, create addtional typography as needed.
- Tools: Photoshop, InDesign/Affinity, Canva/Express

Assignment 12: Preparing a Mockup for a Client
Objective: A presentation of ideas to a client who makes tomato juice
- Photography: use stock for the mockup, your own photography for the final next week.
- Design: A full page ad and a square ad. Several iterations.
- Typography: Up to you.
- Tools: Photoshop, InDesign/Affinity, Canva/Express
Deliverables:
A set of images designed to let the customer know what you have in mind
Two to three ad mockups, font pairings, and ideation boards if needed.

Objective: Deliver a good comp for a knife store that sells boutique cutlery

- Design: Mockup for tri-fold brochure

Assignment 16: Boutique Seed Store
Objective: Two images for a brochure for their retail store.
Design: Using the two images, mock up a point-of-purchase poster: 24×36. This poster will be on the back of the stand holding their newest seed collections.
Deliverables: 2 images and a Point of Purchase display graphic.

Assignment 17: Just Beer Pub
Objective: A visual marketing idea for a new restaurant
Design: Three different ideas for promoting the restaurant. Two can be sketched or mocked up, but one has to be finished out.
Deliverables: Two sketched or mocked up visual marketing ideas, and one finished piece.
